Signs your field or court fencing needs work

Recreation fencing tends to be ignored until a season is underway. These are the things worth catching in the off season instead:

  • Balls escaping past the backstop or over a perimeter that was built too low for how the field is now used
  • Fabric bellied out along a run because the tension is gone
  • A windscreen that has torn away from its ties, which usually means the fence was never designed to carry it
  • Posts leaning in the direction of the prevailing wind, most often on the screened sections

Pickleball is where the most questions come from right now, because courts are being added to existing tennis space and to unused hard courts. A pickleball surround is generally the same height as tennis around the outside, with lower dividers between adjacent courts so balls do not cross but players and officials can see through.

Black fabric on a court is not a style choice

Field and court conditions in Anderson County

Windscreen and the load it puts on a fence

Windscreen is the single most misunderstood item in court fencing, and it causes more leaning posts than anything else on a recreation site.

What it actually does to the fence

Chain link fabric is mostly air, so wind passes through it and the posts feel very little. Windscreen is commonly rated somewhere between about 70 and 95 percent blockage, and attaching it turns that open fence into something the wind has to push rather than pass. The entire load lands on the posts and the footings. A fence engineered for open fabric and then screened after the fact is a fence being asked to do a job it was not priced for.

Designing for it from the start

Windscreen ready means tighter post spacing, heavier pipe wall, larger footings, and a rail arrangement that gives the screen something continuous to lace to along its top and bottom edges. It also means attaching the screen properly, laced at close intervals along every edge rather than tied at the corners, because a screen that flaps at one edge will tear itself off and take fabric ties with it.

Choosing the blockage rating

Higher blockage gives players a better visual background and more shelter from wind, and it also puts more load on the fence. Player safety details that cost almost nothing

Knuckled selvage at the top and bottom of any run a player can reach, no exposed bolt ends at hand height, gate latches that do not protrude into the playing area, and a bottom rail rather than a raw fabric edge along a court. How tall should a tennis or pickleball court fence be?

Around ten feet is the working standard for the ends and outside of a court surround, because that is what reliably keeps a lofted ball inside. Between adjacent courts a lower divider is common, so balls do not cross but players, coaches and officials can still see through.

The right answer depends on the space around the court as much as the sport. A court boxed in by a bank or a building can sometimes run lower on one side. A court beside a parking lot or a road usually cannot. We walk it and set the height against where a ball would actually go.

Can windscreen be added to our existing court fence?

Sometimes, and the honest check is the framework rather than the fabric. Windscreen at common blockage ratings turns an open fence into a wind barrier, and that load goes into the posts and footings. If the fence was built with standard spacing and light pipe, adding screen is asking it to do something it was never sized for.

We will look at post spacing, pipe size and how the existing posts are sitting before we say yes. Where the line is not up to it, adding intermediate posts is often cheaper than replacing the run, and far cheaper than re-setting a leaning fence after the screen has been on for a season.

Why is court fencing usually black?

Because players have to see the ball. Galvanized fabric reflects sun and creates a busy, bright background, while black vinyl coated fabric visually recedes and gives a consistent backdrop for tracking a ball at speed.

There is a durability argument as well. The vinyl jacket sits over a galvanized core and adds a second barrier on a fence that lives in the open, with no building or tree line to shelter it from about 48 inches of rain a year. On a court, the appearance reason usually decides it anyway.

How high does a baseball backstop need to be?

Twenty feet and up is the usual range, and the exact figure depends on the level of play and how close the seating and parking sit behind home plate. A youth field with a wide buffer behind it can go lower than a high school field with a road behind the backstop.

The overhang matters as much as the height. A framed overhang angled back over the plate area catches foul balls that a vertical fence of the same height would let through, and it is often a better spend than adding another five feet of straight fabric.

Where should the maintenance gate go?

Wherever the equipment can actually turn into it, which is not always where the drawing puts it. A gate that is technically wide enough but sits at the end of a tight approach gets clipped by a mower deck within a season, and the fabric beside it takes the damage.

Measure the widest thing that has to pass, then add clearance for the turn. On ball fields that usually means a double drive gate rather than a single leaf, and on courts it means one gate sized for a mower rather than assuming the player gate will do.

Can the work be staged across two budget years?

Yes, and for schools, churches and parks departments it is a common way to do it. The priority is getting the framework right in phase one, because the posts and footings are the part that cannot be upgraded cheaply later.

Windscreen, overhangs, netting and dugout enclosures all add on well to a correctly built fence. We quote them as separate lines specifically so a board or a district can approve them in different cycles without re-pricing the whole project.
