Automation earns its money on frequency, weather and access control. The usual reasons people go ahead:
- A long driveway where getting out of the vehicle twice a trip gets old fast

It is not always the right spend. A gate opened twice a week on a short driveway is hard to justify automating, and we will say so. What we will suggest in that case is running conduit while the ground is open, so the option stays cheap later.
Swing or slide: choosing the operator
Three operator types cover almost all residential and light commercial work here. The gate and the driveway decide which one, not the other way around.

Power is the other choice. Most residential operators run on low voltage DC from a battery that a transformer or a solar panel keeps charged, which is why a properly set up gate still works during an outage. Solar is the practical answer on long rural driveways where trenching several hundred feet of conduit to the road would cost more than the operator.
How we install an automatic gate opener
The sequence is built around one rule: nothing gets powered until the gate itself is right.
- Assess the existing gate, posts and hinges, and swing it by hand to feel for bind, sag and slope
- Weigh and measure the leaf so the operator is sized with margin instead of at its rating
- Plan the route for power, control wiring and any loops, then request utility locates
- Correct the gate first: reset posts, re-square the leaf, upgrade hinges or bracing as needed
- Trench conduit, sleeve under the driveway, and set the operator pad or pedestal
- Mount the operator, connect low voltage and have the power connection made where one is required
- Cut, wind and seal exit, safety and shadow loops in the driveway surface
- Fit photo eyes or safety edges, set the limits and tune the obstruction force
- Program remotes, keypads and callbox, cycle it repeatedly, then show you the manual release
Most residential automations are a one or two day job once the gate is sound. Trenching distance and driveway crossings are what stretch it, which is why we would rather do this at the same time as the gate.
Powering a gate on Anderson County ground

That is where solar changes the arithmetic. A low voltage operator with a battery and a panel in an open spot runs a residential gate at a few cycles a day without a single foot of trench to the house.

What drives the price of an automatic gate opener
The operator is rarely the biggest number on the quote. What moves the total:
- Whether the existing gate and posts can take a motor, or need work first
- Single leaf or double, since a double swing gate needs two operators
- Operator type and duty rating, with slide and high cycle units above basic residential swing arms
- Distance from power to the gate, measured in feet of trench
- Whether the driveway has to be crossed, by sleeve, bore or saw cut
- Power source: an existing circuit, a new circuit run by an electrician, or a solar setup
- Safety devices, with photo eyes, safety edges and loops each adding parts and wiring
- Access control, from a basic keypad to a callbox with a cell connection
- Number of remotes and whether you want phone or code based entry
- Surface type, since a concrete driveway takes a different loop cut than asphalt or gravel
The single biggest saving available is timing. Setting heavier posts and burying conduit during a gate or fence build costs a small fraction of trenching and cutting a finished driveway later.
The gate has to be right before the motor goes on it
An operator is a machine that takes a gate to its limits on a schedule. Everything a hand opened gate gets away with, a powered one exposes within months.
- A leaf that sags half an inch will drag once the motor stops lifting it the way your arm did
- A hinge post that rotates slightly under hand pressure will rotate further under a ram
- A racked frame throws off the limits, so the gate stops short or slams
- Solid infill turns the leaf into a sail, which is a wind load the operator fights every gust
- A gate that swings downhill is being helped closed and fought open by gravity all day
- Undersized hinges wear fast once the cycle count goes from ten a week to forty a day
Slope deserves its own note. A swing gate has to clear rising ground through its entire arc, so on a driveway that climbs away from the road the leaf has to be hung high, cut to the grade, or replaced with a slide gate that never crosses the ground at all. Getting that wrong is the most common reason a powered swing gate stops halfway and reverses.
Safety is part of the specification, not an upgrade
A powered gate is a moving machine next to a driveway where people walk. Operator safety standards call for the machine to sense an obstruction on its own and for a second, independent device to cover each entrapment point, which in practice means photo eyes across the opening or a safety edge on the leading edge. Loops in the driveway do the rest: an exit loop opens the gate as you approach from inside, and a safety loop stops it from closing on a vehicle sitting under it.

Can you automate the gate I already have?
Often yes, and the answer comes from the gate rather than the motor. We look at the weight and length of the leaf, the size and plumb of the hinge post, the hinges themselves and whether the gate is still square. If those are sound, an operator can go on.
If the gate sags, binds or leans, that gets fixed first. Automating a marginal gate does not hold it together, it accelerates everything that was already wrong, because the motor repeats the same load thousands of times a year without ever easing off.
Do I have to run power out to the gate?
You need power at the gate, but not always from the house. Most residential operators run on low voltage DC from a battery, and that battery can be charged either by a transformer fed from your electrical system or by a solar panel mounted at the gate.
Which way we go is usually decided by distance. A gate near the house is cheapest to feed by conduit. A gate several hundred feet down a driveway is often cheaper and simpler on solar, provided the panel gets real sun rather than sitting under a tree line.
What happens when the power goes out?
A low voltage operator with a healthy battery keeps working through an outage, typically for a number of cycles before the battery needs charging again. That is one of the practical advantages of DC operators over line voltage units.
Every operator also has a manual release, usually a key or a lever that disconnects the drive so the gate can be pushed by hand. We show you where it is and make you use it once before we leave, because the time to learn it is not at night in the rain.
Should I choose a swing gate or a slide gate for my driveway?
Look at the ground and the room first. A swing gate needs a clear arc and level or falling ground through that arc, so a driveway that climbs away from the road usually wants a slide gate instead.
A slide gate also wins where the driveway is short, since a swing leaf needs space to open without blocking the road or your parking. The tradeoff is that a cantilever slide needs run back room beside the opening, roughly half again the width of the gate, and that strip has to stay clear.
How do visitors and deliveries get in?
A keypad on a post at the driveway is the simplest answer, and codes can be changed or given out per person. For more control, a callbox rings your phone so you can talk to whoever is at the gate and open it remotely.
Getting out is usually automatic. An exit loop buried in the driveway detects your vehicle and opens the gate as you approach from inside, so nobody needs a remote to leave. Remotes, keypads and loops are commonly all fitted to the same gate.
Are automatic gates safe around children and pets?
They are when the safety devices are specified and set properly. The operator itself senses an obstruction and reverses, and a second independent device covers each entrapment point: photo eyes across the opening, or a safety edge on the leading edge of the gate.
Setup matters as much as the parts. We set the obstruction force as low as the gate will run on, add safety loops where vehicles stop under the arc, and keep the swing path clear of anything that could trap a person between the gate and a fixed object. A powered gate is a machine and it deserves to be treated like one.
