Anderson County, SC
Fence Company in La France, SC
A mill village of a few hundred people on the Pendleton road, where lots are small, houses sit close and the fence line is usually the property line.
There is not much call for a fence company in La France, SC on any given week, because the whole census designated place counted 476 people in the 2020 count. When there is a job here we treat it the same as any other: an on site measure, a free written quote, no deposit and no obligation.
La France sits on US 76 and South Carolina Highway 28 about 10 miles northwest of Anderson, close to Pendleton, with a post office that has carried the 29656 ZIP since April 1871. It is inside Anderson County, so there is no trip charge, and we work 7am to 7pm seven days a week.
A mill village of a few hundred people on the Pendleton road
La France grew up around the Pendleton Manufacturing Company, organized in the 1830s and one of the earliest textile operations in South Carolina, and the mill site later took the La France name that the community still carries. The Census Bureau only listed it as a census designated place for the first time in 2020, at 476 residents.
Village housing built around a mill follows a particular pattern: houses set close to the street, small yards, and lots that were platted for workers rather than for lawns. Where that stock survives, it means short runs, tight side yards and a property line you cannot afford to guess at, because there is no spare ground to absorb a mistake.
There is no town government here and no municipal fence ordinance. La France is unincorporated Anderson County, and South Carolina sets no statewide fence permit or height limit, so county regulation plus anything recorded against your specific parcel is the whole of it.
Small lots, short runs and getting equipment in
The practical problem on a village lot is access. When the gap between the house and the line is four feet, no machine is going through it, so the holes get dug by hand and the material gets carried. We price that at the quote rather than discovering it on the morning of the install.
Short runs also change the arithmetic. Getting a crew and a load of material to your street costs roughly the same whether the fence is 60 feet or 200, so on a small lot the setup is a bigger share of the total than the fence is. If you have been thinking about doing the side line this year and the back next year, it is usually cheaper to do both at once.
Then there is the line itself. Old village plats often have pins that were driven a century ago and have since been buried, mown over or lost to a driveway pour. We set the fence inside your boundary rather than centered on it, so no post or footing crosses, and where the corners genuinely cannot be found we will say a survey is the cheaper road.
Ground contact rated lumberGoes in every wood fence we build here, because South Carolina sits in one of the heaviest termite pressure zones mapped in the residential code.

Questions we get asked
Fence questions from La France homeowners
My lot is small. Is it even worth calling for a quote?
Yes, and the quote costs nothing either way. We do small jobs in La France and the surrounding Pendleton area regularly. What we will tell you honestly is that mobilization is a fixed cost, so a 60 foot run carries a higher price per foot than a 300 foot run does, and that is worth knowing before you compare numbers.
The usual advice on a village lot is to do the whole yard in one visit if you intend to fence it eventually. Splitting it across two years means paying the setup twice for the same fence.
Can you get a machine into my back yard?
Often not, and that is fine. Mill village lots frequently leave three or four feet between the house and the property line, which rules out an auger on a machine. In that case we dig the holes by hand and carry the material through, which is slower but perfectly normal work for us.
What matters is that we see it at the quote rather than on install day. We walk the access route with you, check for a gate, a low limb or a retaining wall in the way, and build the labor into the written number so the price you agree to is the price you pay.
How do I know where my property line runs on an old lot?
Start with your plat and then look for the iron pins at the corners. On parcels this old the pins are commonly buried a few inches under sod, pushed over by a mower, or gone entirely if a driveway or a shed went in over them. A metal detector finds a surprising number of them, and we will look during the quote.
Where the corners cannot be established we do not guess. We will either set the fence conservatively inside where the line is likely to be, with your agreement, or recommend a survey. A survey costs less than relocating a finished fence, and on lots where a foot matters it is money well spent.
