Fence Company in Pendleton, SC
Picket, ornamental aluminum and wrought iron for a town laid out in 1790, plus privacy and repair work on the newer streets outside the district.
Choosing a fence company in Pendleton, SC is partly a question of what the fence is allowed to look like, and that is not true of most towns we work in.
Pendleton was laid out in 1790 and the plan has barely moved since. The Pendleton Historic District went on the National Register in 1970, spans the Anderson and Pickens county line, and holds more than fifty buildings of 18th and 19th century significance, with Farmers Hall of 1826 sitting on the village green. About 3,200 people live here. We build to fit that, and we also build ordinary back yard privacy fence on the streets where none of it applies.
What the historic district changes about a fence
Inside the district, the material and the profile matter as much as the layout. Architecture here runs Greek Revival and Gothic Revival alongside I-houses and later bungalows, and a fence that would pass without comment in a 1990s subdivision can look wrong the moment it goes up in front of a house from the 1840s. The town keeps a design review board for its overlay districts, so the first step on a street facing job is finding out what review your address falls under. We would rather you make that call before we order lumber than after.
Some things we have learned to raise early on Pendleton quotes:
- Street facing runs get judged differently from anything behind the house line
- Picket spacing, cap profile and post cap style are the details people notice, not the overall height
- Paint against clear seal is a maintenance decision as much as an appearance one, and painted wood wants repainting on a schedule
- A powder coated aluminum panel can read as period correct from the sidewalk and reads as modern up close, so it is worth standing at the curb before deciding
- Older stone walls, steps and brick piers along the line change where a post can physically go
None of this stops a job. It just means the design conversation happens at the estimate rather than halfway through the build.
Picket and iron in the front yard
A three to four foot picket is the workhorse of a Pendleton front yard. It defines the property without closing the house off from the green, it suits a porch, and it can be built with a flat top, a spear top, a scalloped run between posts or a straight line to match a neighbor. We build pickets on site rather than hanging prefabricated panels, which is the only way to keep a run level across ground that is not.
Ornamental metal is the other honest answer. Powder coated aluminum will not rust, rack or rot, and it is the cheaper of the two metals by a wide margin. Real ornamental steel is heavier, takes finials, scrolls and a custom gate arch, and is the right call when the house genuinely wants iron and the budget allows for it. We will tell you which one your house is asking for and let you decide from there.
Gates get more attention in Pendleton than anywhere else in the county. A walk gate at the sidewalk is the piece everybody touches and everybody photographs, so we size the post to the leaf and hang it on hardware that will still swing true after a few hundred Anderson County summers of humidity.
Behind the house, the rules relax
Step past the rear building line, or move to a street outside the district, and the job looks like any other Upstate fence. Six foot privacy for a dog or a pool, chain link for a run, split rail on the larger lots toward the edges of town where properties open up. Cedar is popular here for the same reason people choose it elsewhere, which is that it holds its shape and weathers to a gray that does not fight an old house.
Deer pressure is real on the wooded fringes of Pendleton, and a vegetable garden that keeps getting stripped is a different problem from a property line. That is a tall mesh fence around the beds, not a taller fence around the whole yard.

Questions we get asked
Fence questions from Pendleton homeowners
What kind of fence is allowed in the Pendleton Historic District?
There is no single answer we can give you from the truck, because it depends on your address and on what the town's design review covers there. What we can say is what tends to work: wood picket, ornamental metal, and heights that keep a street facing run low rather than tall. What tends to draw objections is a solid tall fence across a front yard and materials that read plainly modern from the sidewalk.
Call the town before you commit to a material. If the answer comes back narrower than you hoped, we redesign inside it. We have built picket runs that met a design expectation and still gave the owner what they wanted, which was usually a dog contained and a boundary defined rather than a wall.
Should I choose aluminum or real wrought iron for a Pendleton front yard?
Aluminum for most houses, steel for the ones that clearly want it. Powder coated aluminum does not rust, does not rack, costs considerably less per foot and comes in profiles that read correctly from the street. For a rental, a budget conscious job, or a run of any real length, it is the sensible pick.
Ornamental steel earns its price when the house has genuine architectural weight and the fence will be seen up close, at a gate, at a corner, at the front steps. It takes finials, scrolls and custom arches that aluminum cannot match. We quote both and let the house make the argument.
Can you repair an old picket fence instead of replacing it?
Often, and in Pendleton it is worth asking. Pickets and rails are replaceable parts. If the profile is original or matched to the house, we can rebuild posts and rails underneath while keeping the pickets that are still sound, then mill or source replacements for the ones that are not. That keeps the fence looking like it has always been there.
The limit is the post line. Once posts have failed at grade across the whole run, you are rebuilding the fence whatever we call it, and at that point the sensible move is to reproduce the original profile in new material with ground contact rated posts underneath. The residential code puts this state in one of its heaviest termite pressure bands, and an old post does not get stronger with age.
